Leadership

Students enrolled in leadership courses have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both up front and behind the scenes. These skills include, but are not limited to, peer to peer mentorship, relationship building, group management, event planning and facilitation, fundraising, advertising, and campaigning. Leadership classes plan and execute assemblies, spirit weeks, fundraisers, and other student activities, and contribute to the culture and climate of the school community.

ASB Leadership

ASB Leadership is a course designed to facilitate student activities, collect, represent and implement student voices and contribute to the evolving culture and climate of the school community. Registration in ASB Leadership is determined by election or an application/selection process by the ASB Executive Board and Advisor.

Intro to Leadership

The Introduction to Leadership course is designed for students to gain an understanding of and develop their personal leadership style, skills and behavior. Students will spend time learning about McMinnville High School’s student body, options for getting involved on campus and opportunities for service learning in the greater McMinnville community. Additionally, students will learn the basics of event planning and facilitation, fundraising, advertising, campaigning and other skills that can translate to involvement in athletics, academics, clubs and other leadership positions. Service learning is a requirement for this course, students may also be required to attend field trips and service opportunities off campus throughout the duration of the course.

Advanced Leadership

The Advanced Leadership course is designed to prepare students for ASB Leadership. Students will apply previous leadership experience by taking on a more independent role in events, initiatives and coursework aligned with the ASB Leadership course. Advanced Leadership students may be stacked with Intro to Leadership or part of a separate cohort. Students will practice and continue to develop the necessary skills for ASB Leadership. These skills include, but are not limited to, peer to peer mentorship, relationship building, group management, event planning and facilitation, fundraising, advertising, and campaigning. Make take more than once for credit.

Sources of Strength

In Sources of Strength, peer leaders harness social networks to create healthy norms and culture in their school community, ultimately preventing suicide, violence, bullying, and substance misuse. In this class, students create and facilitate school wide initiatives related to wellbeing and school culture, helping their community develop and identify their own pillars of strength. Students learn how to plan and deliver effective prevention messages about hope, help, and strength. Students gain skills in research, advocacy, public speaking, content creation and media, event planning, budgeting, networking ,and how to make lasting change within a community. May take more than once for credit.
