College and Career Preparation

McMinnville High School students will each to develop the knowledge and skills to be successful in future college and a career choices. This includes critical thinking skills such as analysis, interpretation, problem solving, and reasoning as well as developing academic behaviors such as time management and effective note-taking. Students will develop a strong understanding of the skills and knowledge for getting into and succeeding in college, including understanding the admissions process, placement testing, financial aid, and other expectations such as how to communicate with professors and peers.

College and Career Preparation Courses

9th Grade PEP is a required first semester class for 9th graders who are not in the AVID elective class. This course is designed to orient students to the high school's programs so that they can adequately plan for the courses and activities in which they will invest during their four-years at MHS. In addition, students will learn valuable soft skills that will help them navigate their classes and maximize their success so that their transition to high school will be as smooth as possible.

The 11th Grade Personal Education Plan (PEP) course is a required second-semester class for juniors who are not enrolled in the AVID elective. PEP is structured to prepare students for thorough career exploration and a range of post-secondary opportunities, allowing them to make knowledgeable decisions about their plans beyond high school. Throughout the course, students will engage in activities such as in-depth career and college research, financial literacy curriculum and budgeting simulations, résumé development, interview preparation, application guidance, scholarship searches, and core employability skills.

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a rigorous course designed for motivated and determined students that intend to pursue a four-year college degree. AVID students work through peer study groups and collaborate with college academic coaches to deepen their content knowledge, practice questions strategies and lead discussions.

TRIO/Upward Bound

This course will prepare participants for post-secondary education. Topics include financial aid & financial literacy, career exploration, test taking strategies, college identity, and ACT/SAT test preparation. Upward Bound students will participate in a number of team building activities throughout the course to help develop soft skills that will prepare them for the workforce and college success. Students will have access to tutoring twice a week.

Peer Tutor

Media Technology Intern

Media Tech Interns will work independently and alongside Help Desk technicians to learn real world IT skills. Tech Interns will move throughout the building and McMinnville's District Office to assist technicians with projects, repairs, and teacher IT requests. Must have your own transportation between McMinnville High School and District Office.

Library aides work alongside library staff to learn real world library & information service skills. Students are trained to use live circulation software, shelve materials, assist with displays and deliveries, and help patrons locate resources. Students will also learn about careers in the field of Library and Information Science and how libraries play a role in educating people who are not college-bound.
