Explores the philosophy & history of emergency services. Presents the history of loss of life & property in fire, major medical emergencies, & natural disasters. Covers the responsibility of emergency services in a community, the roles, values & responsibilities of a paramedic & firefighter, an overview of the ICS system & the organization & function of emergency services agencies & allied organizations, education & certification. Includes sources of professional literature, awareness and identification of hazardous materials, emergency services apparatus, fire behavior, detection & protection systems, cultural diversity, harassment in the workplace and survey of professional career opportunities and requirements.
Introductory skills based class that practices donning and operating within the personal protective equipment and breathing apparatus used by structural firefighters. Students will also learn how to tie various knots used in the fire service, operate as a team to provide CPR, use proper body mechanics to move patients and rescue other firefighters and how to operate a charged hoseline. Students taking this class must have the physical ability to crawl 100 feet wearing firefighter gear with a breathing apparatus weighing approximately 45 pounds combined.
Further exploration of the skills used by firefighters and EMS providers. This class takes the skills gained in Skills 1 and gains further proficiency. Additional skills would include raising and lowering ladders, advancing charged hose lines, controlling fire water streams, searching for and rescuing victims and firefighters in dark or limited visibility environments, connecting a fire engine to a hydrant and moving patients off the floor and onto a gurney. Students taking this class must have the physical ability to crawl 200 feet wearing firefighter gear and then drag a similarly sized student wearing firefighting gear 100 feet as part of a team.
Introductory study on wildland firefighting operations. Course will cover the 10 Standard Firefighting Orders, and 18 Situations That Shout Watch out. Students will complete the online requirements for L-180, S-190, S-130 and the FEMA ICS Block (100, 200, 700 and 800). Anizations that provide wildland firefighting coverage in Oregon and the United States. Prepare students on how to get hired and be successful after hiring. Prepare students for the physical requirements needed to be hired.
Continuation of the skills learned in Skills 1 and 2. Additionally students will begin to acquire the soft skills needed to be successful in emergency services such as cooking a meal for a group, cleaning a station, bathroom and kitchen, proper phone/radio etiquette, interviewing and resume creation, teamwork and apparatus/equipment maintenance.
Students will learn about the organization, rules, requirements and regulations of fire departments. They will study and practice the tools and techniques used by firefighters to control or extinguish fires; and examine the behavior of fires. This course will also include emergency medical procedures and services. Transportation not included.
